I have tried to have conversations with a Repub fundie and am currently involved with a blog that seems to have a Repub techie, pro-nuke bend. Ain't no way that I can see to get through to them. You try to talk to one point and they drift over to something entirely off-topic. The armor is so thick that you can't get through and the basic disrespect for any opinion that is not part of the orthodoxy lies just beneath the surface. Politeness is one thing but after a certain point, you just want to slash and burn.

True believers can not be argued with. If you even make one scratch in the armor, defensiveness will begin to take over and the true believer will lash out.

Playboy Magazine ran a contest a number of years ago to come up with an appropriate name for the MoralMajorityChristianCoalitionReligiousRight. The winner was Moral Mafia. The editors felt that the analogy to organized crime was appropriate. They are very organized and they have no ethical qualms about forcing their brand of morality on everyone else.
